RFChat Terms of Use

Acceptance of Terms

By downloading or using RFChat on iOS or macOS, you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

Description of RFChat

RFChat is an offline amateur packet-radio chat client. It exchanges AX.25 UI frames through a user-supplied KISS-compatible TNC and radio equipment. RFChat provides no network service of its own: it operates entirely on your device and your radio equipment, with no servers and no accounts.

Radio Equipment and Licensing

• Transmitting on amateur radio frequencies requires a valid amateur radio license issued by the authority in your jurisdiction.
• You are solely responsible for complying with all radio, spectrum, licensing, and station-identification regulations that apply to you, including using only frequencies and power levels you are authorized to use.
• RFChat flags some out-of-band frequencies for a selected region as a convenience. These warnings are informational only and are not legal advice; regulations vary and change.

User Responsibilities

• You are responsible for the callsign you configure, the content you transmit, the frequencies you use, and the decision to enable position sharing.
• You must not use RFChat to transmit content that is unlawful in your jurisdiction or prohibited by amateur radio regulations (for example, commercial traffic or music, where prohibited).

Public Nature of Radio Communications

Amateur radio is a shared, public medium. Anything you transmit — messages, directed messages, and position reports — can be received, read, and recorded by any station on the frequency. RFChat is not a private or encrypted messaging tool; amateur-band regulations prohibit encrypting message content. Do not transmit anything you would not say publicly.

Location Sharing

Position sharing is off by default. If you enable it, your coordinates are broadcast on the radio channel where anyone can receive them. You are responsible for deciding when sharing your position is appropriate.

Emergency Use Disclaimer

Do not rely on RFChat as your only means of emergency communication. Message delivery is never guaranteed: radio coverage, interference, hardware, antennas, weather, and channel congestion all affect whether a transmission is received, and RFChat performs no automatic retransmission. Always have alternative means of contacting emergency services.

Compatible Devices

RFChat requires third-party equipment it does not manufacture or control: a KISS-compatible TNC (software or hardware) and radio equipment. Compatibility with any particular TNC, radio, or software modem is not guaranteed.

Prohibited Conduct

• Transmitting without the required license or outside your license privileges.
• Deliberate interference with other stations or services.
• Using another station’s callsign, or impersonating another operator.
• Any use that violates applicable law or amateur radio regulations.

Intellectual Property

RFChat is open-source software released under the MIT License. The RFChat name, icon, and artwork are part of the project’s identity; the MIT license text governs use of the source code. CHIRP is a third-party project; RFChat implements compatibility with its CSV file format only and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the CHIRP project.

Third-Party Equipment and Services

References to third-party products (for example Dire Wolf or Mobilinkd) are for identification only. We are not responsible for third-party hardware, software, or their terms.

Availability and Updates

RFChat is provided as-is through the App Store. Features may change with updates, and support for older OS versions may end. We are under no obligation to provide updates or maintain compatibility with any particular equipment.

Disclaimer of Warranties

RFChat is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the app will be error-free, that connections will be stable, or that any message will be delivered.

Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages — including lost communications, regulatory penalties arising from your operation of radio equipment, or losses resulting from reliance on the app for critical communication — arising out of or relating to your use of RFChat.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Indonesia, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.

Changes to Terms

We may update these terms; the current version will always be posted at this address with its effective date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance.
